So here we are, the day after Thanksgiving and here am I, at work. Buuuuutttt, not exactly working, eh? I will, I will, heaven knows I have plenty more catch-up to do from my week off. Actually, I’m not unhappy to be at work. It’s very quiet – only 3 other people in the office. It will soon be quieter as they are leaving at noon. I should get a lot done. No interruptions, ya know. Plus I was never one of those mad shoppers who brave the crowds on Black Friday. No indeed. Not my kinda fun.
One year ago yesterday I wrote my first post on TravelingMermaid. Happy Birthday to me!
Yes, I was one of “those people” who started her blog post-Katrina – does that make me not a real blog? Nah. A lot of really good ones began after the flood, a lot of good people putting out an effort to help Nola and raise awareness of the many issues we were and still are struggling through.
I started working on this post a week or so ago which is so not like me. I never have anything in my draft folder. Always write on the run and off the cuff. It comes to you as I think it (no sarcasm, please!). That’s the difference between a for- fun blog and a serious blog. This has been sitting in draft since the day I began it. I am so Aries….I didn’t finish the post that day and since have lost interest. If I don’t get it done at once I tend to go on to other things. I had decided to scrap it but now that I’m here with the whole day ahead of me I think I’ll go ahead and post although it may be somewhat disjointed.
So this post will be about the people I’ve met along the way in the past year, thanks to the magic of the internet. Today I want to talk about You Out There. Other people are so much more interesting to talk about and listen to. I don’t feel the need to tout myself. Love me or hate me: I yam what I yam and that’s what I yam! I strive to not be too much of an “I” person – how utterly boring that can become!
As I’ve said before, I had no idea what a blog was until Katrina and my discovery of Operation Eden and Polimom which continue to be the best of the best, IMO. They were my impedus to start this blog. I won’t go into the why’s and wherefore’s, they know why and wherefore.
Through Polimom I began to slowly discover other Nola bloggers. I began clicking on comments left on her posts and that is how I found Schroeder, da ‘po boy, Tim and Mark. Somehow later (don’t remember how) I found Ray, Oyster, Morwen,Dangle, Rob and Marco.
For the longest time I confused da ‘po boy and Oyster. I couldn’t remember if Oyster belonged to YRHT or Da Po Blog. I finally devised this little mental trick: oysters are my favorite food and I eat with my right hand – wa la! Oyster is YRHT! (Who says all blondes are dumb?)
Then I kept confusing Mark and Ray. Hmmm….they both lived outside Nola (at the time), they both were moving back, they both grew up here…..how to remember who is who? I think it finally sunk in after Mark and I exchanged emails and discovered our mutual ages and musical tastes. I particularly remember one post where I mentioned Rick Wakeman’s Journey to the Center of the Earth and he was tickled that someone else remembered that. After much 1970’s musical discussion I now think of him as my soul brutha (didn’t know that, didja?!). Then, of course, Ashley was in the” living away but moving back” category but I had no trouble confusing him with anyone else. Why not? “FYYFF” ! That’s why! An inspired bit of writing, to be sure.
Then one day Bec popped up. I was thrilled to find another Nola blogger sistah – I love her writing style where her goodness really shines through.
OK, here’s where I’m picking up the posting again. I would love to post a few words about each and every Nola blogger and others that I read but – eh. Just know I love each and every blog in my blog roll and a few others I haven’t had brain cells enough to remember to add.
My blogger friend B. has done a posting where she lists all her blogroll with a comment. I will do that too one day. B. has a great blog – very magical, mystical, eclectic, thoughtful, funny, and sometimes sad. She was the very first commenter on my very first post. She has been a wonderful blogger sistuh, always very supportive. I love ya, B!
Anyway, I need to get to work so I’ll close by saying “Thanks” to all my readers and blogger buds.

Congratulations on a fun year. TravelingMermaid has been one of my favorite finds.
Congratulations!
Happy Thanksgiving
You woke up too early...and happy leftovers to you!
Has it really been a year? Seems like longer and shorter, all at the same time, doesn't it?
Mermaid, what that really means (to me) is that I've waited far too long to tell you how much I've enjoyed your blog(s). You brought a much different flavor to the internet sphere my mind travels through; you remind me often to check my soul and spirit, and I'm always glad I did.
One year on... good for you. And good for all of us.
Thanks, guys. You 3 have totally different blogs, all of which I read and enjoy regularly. Keep up the good work!
Polimom,
You are way too kind but, hey, I love it!
Great post. I now have to examine my path through the NOLA blogosphere. Great blog. Thanks.
I could've written much more -- didn't even touch on the non-Nola blogosphere buds. Maybe a second post if I can get it together.
Thanks for the compliment, you po' po' boy, you!
And thank you. From a blogger who went home to Lafayette for the holiday. :-) Mmmmm, cajun food.
Mmmmm, cajun food - yes!
I've been meaning to tell you that the pix you emailed me of your trip were incredible!
Great to hear from ya, Willie.
Congrats.
You have good taste!
Ersters are the best!
Sweetie, I just got a chance to read this as I came over here to get a link from you. I can't thank you enough for your kind words, and congrats on one year. I love your blog and hope you keep it going. It's important to have a different perspective.
I'm still waiting for a drink with ya!
